NORTON

Norton, Ohio, came into existence in 1818 and was originally part of the Wolf Creek Township. It is believed that the great explorer DeSalle was the first to lay eyes on this area of land. There is little known about how the town came to be, but what we do know is that the city of Norton was founded on some of the finest land, known as the Western Reserve.

One of the most popular things to do in Norton is to attend the annual Norton Cider Festival, held every Fall. Start off the celebration by attending the traditional pancake breakfast and then wash it all down with some delicious cider samples. Save room for later, so you can try out many of apple delicacies such as homemade apple pie and apple dumplings. Check out the colors and sounds of the hometown parade as you munch on your apple treats. Take the kids for carnival styles games and rides, and end the day relaxing on a picnic blanket enjoying the family-friendly concerts at the gazebo.

If you like the outdoors, spend the day at Columbia Woods Park. The kids can frolic in the extensive playground area while you challenge your partner to a tennis match. Play a game of pickup basketball or take photos of the charming ducklings at the pond. There are three large pavilions where you can picnic or grill, and there’s plenty of space to let your four-legged furry friends run around.

Part of Norton history is The Tavern at Loyal Oak, where you can get a delicious meal and enjoy an ice-cold beer. This historic landmark was built in the 1840s and was originally a cabinet shop. Before you have too many beers here and let your guard down, be on the lookout for the friendly tavern ghost, that according to locals, still haunts this historic gem. The belief is that a former bartender hung himself there and now appears to guests as a trickster, tossing pots and pans around and moving objects.

Be sure to pick up some gourmet gifts at the Frontier Fruit & Nut Co. off Wadsworth Road. This place has a huge assortment of nuts, dried fruit, and candies, popcorn, and pretzels. The Ohio Dairyland Cheese Company also offers a great selection of quality cheeses and smoked sausage for you to savor. Don’t forget the sumptuous cookies from Cookie Express to complete your snacking extravaganza. They are more than happy to combine your treats into a fanciful gift basket feast for you to enjoy or to ship to family and friends.
